Founded in 1974, the civil rights organization is a private full-service, fair housing organization engaged in Education & Outreach, Complaint Intake & Counseling, and Enforcement.
Metro's mission is to promote social justice and eliminate housing and lending inequities for all people through leadership, education and outreach, public policy advocacy and enforcement.
Passed in 1968 and as amended in 1988, the Federal Fair Housing Act (FHA) prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, lending, insuring, and advertising of housing based on Race, Color, National Origin, Religion, Sex or gender, Familial Status, or Disability (the seven protected classes or characteristics). The law makes it illegal to deny a person or family a housing opportunity that they can afford if that denial is because of their race, color, the country they are from, their religion, sex or gender, the presence of persons under 18 years of age in their household, or because they have a disability.
